Extension System Design: The Forgotten Foundation for Successful Food Transitions

With a passion and curiosity for driving positive change in New Zealand’s food and fibre sector, I blend hands-on farming experience with deep research insights, collaborating closely with farmers, scientists, and policy makers. My current work in agricultural extension is driven by a fresh perspective, examining how both formal and informal institutions shape the way we tackle complex challenges. Through my PhD research, I’m uncovering how these institutional influences have impact on extension and the subsequent adoption of innovation. I aim to improve current knowledge and practical approaches in extension design and delivery by fostering meaningful collaboration and creating enduring benefits for farms, farmers, communities, and our environment.

I’m convinced that transformative breakthroughs arise when institutions, ideas, and people converge. Yet, it seems that too often, agricultural extension falls short of realising this potential. By challenging conventional extension practices and building extension systems designed to thrive in complexity, I intend to inspire new connections and lead purposeful change. Expanding my professional networks both locally and abroad, I actively share discoveries to empower others to integrate institutional awareness into their work, making progressive change not only possible but sustainable. The impact of this research promises to reshape the future of agricultural extension. Are you curious to see what’s next?
