Call for proposals

We are currently calling for proposals by supervisory teams for PhD projects to begin in 2026.

When this process is completed, PhD projects will be advertised on this site

Who can apply?

 

Teams of three or more supervisors

To be eligible for consideration, the PhD project must be supervised by a joint team that involves at least three supervisors, including:

1.     a Senior/Main Supervisor from the scholarship-granting university (Lincoln University or University of Canterbury).

2.     a Co- or Associate- Supervisor from the other university

3.     a Co-Supervisor or Associate Supervisor from the Bioeconomy Science Institute.

There is a limit of one application per primary supervisor.

What topics would be suitable?

 

We conduct research to support the transition of our regional, national and international food systems to a future, more sustainable, state. The date 2050 signifies that the timescale of change on which the work in the Joint Postgraduate School will focus is intergenerational.

Our four sub-themes and some indicative (but not exhaustive) topics are:

Food and Future Landscapes

This theme might include for example work on....

·     food production for sustainable land use

·     lowering water use or contamination by food production

·     food production and ecosystem biodiversity

Food for a Carbon Zero Future

This theme might include for example work on....

·     current food, future food

·     carbon zero supply chains and circular economies

·     regenerative farming

Food Consumer Transitions

This theme might include for example work on....

·     changing consumer habits

·     supply chains and consumer choice: food provenance

·     food, health and well being

Food Governance 2050

This theme might include for example work on....

·     legislative changes and food sovereignty

·     food safety transitions and food security

·     Treaty of Waitangi and food transitions

Applications for projects are now OPEN

Applications for projects by supervisory teams open in September each year. Prospective candidates will be able to apply for PhD positions within these projects from mid-November.
